This cannon uses steam rather than gunpowder to fire the cannonball. A container full of water is placed on top of a brazier, or pan of burning coals, near the breech, or back end, of the gun. When the water is heated, it turns into steam. The force of the steam propels the ammunition out of the cannon. Steam cannons were used during the American Civil War and World War II.
